What does it really mean to court someone? Court means different things to different people. Some would say that courtship is a good thing while others do not see it that way. When we talk about dating relationships, then the term dating is used to define courtship. So what does it really mean to courting someone? What does it mean to courtship?
This can be a confusing term because of its various definitions = Court in general is defined as a process by which people come into close contact with one another that often includes formal greeting, hugging, kissing and other forms of intimate gestures. What does this have to do with dating? Courtship is a form of friendly interaction that typically occurs prior to marriage. This is different from dating in that the focus is on romance and courtship instead of love. So what does it really mean to courting someone?
The definition that I gave for courtship above pertains to a form of friendly interaction = However, courting also involves formal greeting, embraces, and kissing while you are in a relationship. These are all considered part of courtship. For example, when you are courting a woman you are expressing interest in her and possibly paving the way for marriage.
While courting is a good thing to engage in before marriage = it is important to realize that courtship and dating are very different. A much better way to think of courting is having a sexual encounter with someone while you are still involved with someone else. If you don’t have sex, then courting isn’t really an option. If you do have sex, then courtship may become a factor. So, while you may be open to dating a person, you should only consider a relationship with that person if you have no desire to get married to them first.
This is why you shouldn’t confuse courtship with dating = It is very different. If you have ever been engaged in any type of dating or courting, you know that there are physical intimacy issues. The purpose of courtship is to establish a level of comfort, security, and trust that will lead to physical intimacy in the future. Therefore, if you want to have your wedding just as easily as you would have met your partner if you had gone out on a date, then I would say that courting is fine.
However, if you want to take your relationship to the next level and start having physical intimacy with someone, then courtship is not for you.
